PODCAST: Kyrie Irving Tears ACL; Where Do Mavs Go From Here?

We keep saying things can't get much worse for the Dallas Mavericks, and yet...

One could argue that the last five weeks have been the worst experience for Dallas Mavericks fans in the franchise’s entire 45-year history. Older fans who experienced 1990s Mavs basketball might disagree with that assessment, but again… an argument can be made.

As if losing 26-year-old superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers wasn’t enough, the gut-punches seemingly keep coming with each passing day since that Feb. 1 trade. In addition to several other key injuries that have derailed this season for Dallas, Anthony Davis was injured just three quarters into his Mavs debut and hasn’t suited up since. And now, the catastrophic injury news gets even worse.

On Monday night against the Sacramento Kings, Mavs star point guard Kyrie Irving hyperextended his knee on a drive to the rim in the first quarter. The Mavs initially called Irving’s injury a “knee sprain,” but after further testing on Tuesday, they discovered that he tore his ACL. And just like that, Irving’s season is officially over. Dallas’ season might be over as well, as it has a 3.5 game lead over the Phoenix Suns for the final Play-In Tournament spot in the West with 20 games to go.

Earlier today, I got together with my guy Drew Johnson to do an unfortunate “emergency pod” discussing the Kyrie injury knews and where the team should go from here. Will GM Nico Harrison double down on his vision and go after Kevin Durant this summer? Could a new regime come in and completely start from scratch with a rebuild? Should AD sit out the rest of this season and consider having abdominal surgury to avoid future issues? Let’s talk about it.
